USC edges FHS tennis; Bucs cage Tigers, 6-1

WELLS - The United South Central Rebels garnered three singles matches to help pace a 5-2 victory over the Fairmont Cardinals during girls tennis action Monday in Wells.

Cardinal junior Allison Moeller prevented a Rebel singles sweep by earning back-to-back 6-1 set victories over Linsey Thisius at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.

Sophomore Shantel Quist and freshman Abby Fitzgerald pocketed Fairmont's other point during the non-league dual meet. Quist and Fitzgerald outslugged Veronica Schindler and Angela Bixby, 6-3, 7-5, at third doubles.

The Cardinals' Andrea Carstensen and Micaela Gochanour combined to win their opening set against Joyce Rubio and Deanna Shellen, 6-2, at second doubles. Unfortunately for Carstensen and Gochanour, Rubio and Shellen claimed the team point via wins of 6-2 and 6-4 in the second and third sets, respectively.

USC's Claire Christian netted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Aubrey Green at first singles, while the Rebels' Julia Stenzel downed Missy Viesselman, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 3 singles spot. Ali Wood posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Jill Paris at the No. 4 position to cap the Rebels' singles points.

USC's Monica Bye and Kia Legred netted a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Briana Gratz and Sophie Shelgren at first doubles.

Fairmont (0-1) travels to Sherburn today for a 4:30 p.m. nonconference dual meet against Martin County West.

Blue Earth Area 6, Belle Plaine 1 - The Bucs made a clean sweep of the doubles bracket via three three-set victories to help engineer a 6-1 non-league triumph over the Tigers on Monday at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.

Natali Fellows and Karli Olsen combined at first doubles to outslug Allison Stolee and Jane Schneider in an extended match, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, to put Blue Earth Area in the win column.

The Bucs' Abby Nimz and Aeli Olson bounced back from an opening-set loss to Sophie Brazil and Jamie Read to eventually pocket a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 second-doubles win.

Paige Darrington and Autumn Drake then wrapped up BEA's doubles sweep by outlasting Meghan Gavin and Kaisa Hallgren at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

Lindsey Prokop helped pace the Bucs' winning ways in the singles bracket, downing Lindsay Vennie, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot.

Annika Wilhelmi posted a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Kate Savage at third singles, while Buc teammate Kaitlyn Olsen served back-to-back 6-2 set losses to Ireland Lambrecht at the No. 4 spot.

Ashley Morrison outlasted Karleigh Wolff, 6-4, 6-4, during first singles action to net the Tigers' only team point.

Blue Earth Area (3-1) plays host to Martin County West at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.
