FAIRMONT - Both area amateur baseball teams live to see another round of the state tournament with wins this weekend.
Blue Earth crushed the Detroit Lakes Angels 11-4 on Saturday at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud to advance to the next round, while Fairmont shut out New Munich 6-0 on Sunday at Faber Field to advance.
The Pirates (32-5) will face Maple Lake at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, once again at Faber Field.
The Martins (30-6) will face Bird Island at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.
Fairmont's Shaun McGuire pitched nine innings of four-hit baseball to lead the Martins to a shut-out victory Sunday.
McGuire struck out seven and walked three to earn the win.
Alex Schmidt started out the rally for Fairmont in the bottom of the third inning with a single. Tanner Nawrocki laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Alex Schmidt to second.
Alex Schmidt took third on a throwing error by the New Munich second basemen.
Aaron Siefken collected an RBI, hitting into a fielder's choice to score Alex Schmidt from third to make it 1-0.
Adam Schmidt once again got things going in the fourth, leading off with a single.
Scott Chirpich drove a double into the outfield and moved Schmidt to third. Ian Bents collected the RBI with a single to move Chirpich to third and score Adam Schmidt.
Chirpich scored on Alex Schmidt's single, collecting the RBI to make it 3-0.
Max Waletich added to the score with a triple in the seventh, scoring McGuire from first, who reached after being hit-by-pitch.
Waletich was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and collected one RBI in the win.
Another two runs in the eighth gave McGuire some cushion to finish out the game on the mound.
Chirpich led off with a single and rounded to second on Bents' base hit.
Jordan Petschke flew out to right-field, allowing Chirpich to take third.
Tanner Nawrocki hit a single to send Bents to third and scored Chirpich to make it 5-0. Bents stole home to score the sixth Fairmont run.
Chirpich went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for Fairmont. Alex Schmidt and Bents each went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI to help pace the offense.
Adam Schmidt added two hits and a run scored in the win.
Shawn Schoenberg got the start for new Munich, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and walking one to take the loss.
Nolan Anderson and Adam Stangler each had two hits for the Silver Streak's.
Blue Earth's Kane Malo hit three home runs and collected four RBIs to pace the Pirates in their second-round victory on Saturday.
The Pirates scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to out-slug the Angels in the second round.
The teams were knotted at 2-2 after two innings before Blue Earth took the first lead of the game.
In the fourth the Pirates scored two, and another two in the fifth gave them a 6-2 lead.
The Angels scored two in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game close, but Blue Earth added anther run in the sixth to increase their lead.
Lee Hodges pitched eight innings for the Pirates and allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out nine to earn the win.
Aaron Wendt was 2-for-5, including a triple, a run scored and one RBI to add to Blue Earth's offense.
John Franta was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while Cody Sukalski was 2-for-6 with a double.
