FAIRMONT - Workers from Fitzgerald Movers took over Fairmont City Hall on Thursday afternoon, clearing out furniture from the second floor in preparation for some cosmetic improvements on the building.
Carpet layers were expected to arrive first thing today to replace the high-traffic flooring. The existing carpet has not been replaced since City Hall relocated to the building in 1986, according to city administrator Mike Humpal.
The project is expected to cost $30,000-plus, for carpet and moving expenses. Humpal said the city has been putting money aside for the improvement. The timing also was convenient, since a number of people have needed to move their offices due to retirements and job transitions.
TIGHT?FIT— Scott Hillmer and Dan “The Movin’ Man” Fitzgerald wait for the elevator on the second floor of Fairmont City Hall as they remove furniture from the building Thursday afternoon. Carpeting starts today.
City Hall will be closed today, so Rickway Carpets of Mankato can replace the carpet on the second floor over the weekend.
Next Friday, the building will be closed again while the first-floor carpet is replaced.
