FAIRMONT - Shoe Sensation lived up to its name Thursday at the store's grand opening at Five Lakes Centre.
It's been about 20 years since Fairmont has had a store that only sells shoes, according to mall manager Nancy Olson, and the demand for a local supplier was apparent based on customer turnout.
"We gave away door prizes to the first 100 customers, and we probably had 200 customers lined up," said Shoe Sensation employee Tiphanie Olmstead.

Thursday at the store’s grand opening at ive Lakes Centre in Fairmont.
"Who would anticipate that in Fairmont, Minnesota?" asked store manager Connie Hackett.
The new location had a quiet unveiling last Thursday, opening its doors to customers without any big fanfare in order to avoid overwhelming newly trained employees. And still the word got out.
"People are excited," said Kelli Gill, Shoe Sensation's area director, who has had people stop her elsewhere in town to ask about the shoe store's opening. "... The buzz is big."
Much of the business has been back-to-school shopping, particularly Skechers' Bella Ballerina girls shoes, which include a built-in rotating disc on the toe of the soles.
"We've been selling a bit of everything - athletic shoes, sandals, men's sandals - lots of those," Hackett said.
Customers can register through the weekend to win a free pair of shoes for their immediate family.
Shoe Sensation, Inc, is based in Jeffersonville, Ind. The company operates 82 stores in 12 states.
