FAIRMONT - Funeral Service for Herbert "Dewey" Valentine, 83, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 6, 2012, at United Methodist Church in Fairmont with interment in Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Dewey passed away on Thursday evening, August 2, 2012, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.
Herbert Dewey Valentine was born on December 26, 1928, in Kerkhoven, Minn. He was the son of Herbert and Trella (Dexter) Valentine. Dewey and his family moved to Truman when he was an infant. He grew up in Truman and graduated from Truman High School.
On April 4, 1956, Dewey was united in marriage to Sharon Eden at the Methodist Church in Algona, Iowa. This union was blessed with three children, Douglas, Debra, and DeAnn. The couple shared 56 years together.
Dewey and Sharon farmed near Truman where they attended Truman Church of Christ. Dewey was active in the Truman School Board, Truman Jaycees, and various other school and community organizations. Dewey and Sharon moved to Fairmont in 1996 and became members at United Methodist Church in Fairmont.
During his free time, Dewey enjoyed traveling and camping. The family would take trips around the United States. After his retirement from farming in 1982, Dewey and Sharon spent a lot of time traveling and going on cruises. They wintered in Tavares, Fla., for 30 years as well as spending time at their cabin on Lake Koronis near Paynesville, Minn., for 40 years. Dewey most loved the time he got to spend with his grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Sharon Valentine, of Fairmont, Minn.; daughters, Debra Cichanski and her husband, Mike, of Maple Grove, Minn., and DeAnn Campbell and her husband, Ken, of Burley, Idaho; four grandchildren, Katie Smye and her husband, Andy, Sam Gunderson, Ben Cichanski and Erin Cichanski; great-grandchild, Kailee Gunderson; sister, Gloria Schwake, of Truman, Minn.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Herbert and Trella Valentine, Dewey was also preceded in death by his son, Douglas Valentine; and sisters, Virginia Dedrickson, and Wanda Wilke.
