To the Editor:
Hot Meals on Wheels expresses its gratitude to the Fairmont community.
It is by your generous support that meals are being delivered to home-bound seniors and people with disabilities, helping to ensure that individuals in our community receive nutritious meals and the human connection they need, enabling them to live independently.
Currently, 27 clients are being served a noon meal 6 days per week in their homes. Thank you, thank you to the 10 churches and 8 service groups that have recruited the volunteer drivers. Your willingness to serve is much appreciated.
This past year has been a challenging, interesting and exciting one. I was reminded recently of Pat Willet, the woman who single-handedly kept Hot Meals on Wheels afloat for years, and it brought to mind my own panic in those first couple months when I took the position of volunteer director. I wondered why I had accepted this enormous responsibility, with no board in place to assist with the duties. The coming year had some open weeks with no drivers, and I didn't know what to do except pray. Well, four people came forward and joined the board; two new service groups took three weeks; and another service group added two more weeks, for a total of six. Plus we changed caterers without a hitch. Whew!
We look again to the generosity of the community, as we are facing six weeks in 2013 with no drivers. We are hopeful some of the larger businesses or even an extended family will want to join hands with Hot Meals on Wheels. We're also continuing to search for four more board members. We meet only four times per year, and the more people we have to pitch in, whether it's helping organize the meal delivery or writing thank you notes, the lighter the load on everyone.
Thank you again, from Hot Meals on Wheels.
