NEW ULM - The Fairmont American Legion Post 36 baseball lineup held a 10-9 lead over New Ulm Gold during the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday night at Mueller Park in New Ulm.

New Ulm Gold loaded the bases with no outs when Fairmont defender Luke Becker suffered an injury by accidentally hitting the fence while trying to track down a foul ball. Becker was forced to exit the game, leaving Fairmont with only eight players, leading to Gold receiving a forfeit.

"It's one of those odd situations, and even worse, Luke was injured on the play," said Post 36 mentor Scott Chirpich.

Becker and Spencer Chirpich, who was playing in his first game back since suffering an eye injury in a June 16 game, each produced three hits to top Fairmont's offense. Chirpich also collected two RBIs and scored two runs.

Andy Reiter generated two hits and three RBIs for Post 36, while teammate Bryce Holm collected a single and a double. Brandon Brooks contributed a two-run single, while Ben Gratz added an RBI single.

Holm allowed nine runs - only four earned - on seven hits, walked four and fanned one in four innings of work. Ryan Noll did not allow a run on two hits, and walked three in one-plus inning of relief for Fairmont.

Jason Shaul produced two hits, including a two-run triple, to top New Ulm Gold, while teammate Tim Kehren netted two hits and scored two runs. Jory Dove added a two-run single for Gold.

Dan Blackstad gave up four runs on six hits, walked seven and fanned four in 3 1/3 innings on the mound for New Ulm Gold.

Matt Bergmann allowed six runs on seven hits, struck out one and walked one in 2 2/3 innings of relief for New Ulm Gold.

Fairmont (5-5) travels to Sleepy Eye for a rescheduled game at 7 p.m. next Thursday night.
