Minnesota Lake trips Truman

TRUMAN - Minnesota Lake American Legion Post 287 pitcher Zach Krengel struck out 14 batters in seven innings on the mound to engineer a 5-3 victory over Truman Legion Post 115 in Sub-District 'C' baseball playoff action Thursday night in Truman.

Minnesota Lake plays United South Central in an 8 p.m. winners-bracket game tonight in Truman, while Truman (6-9) plays St. Clair at 6 p.m. today in an elimination game in Truman.

United South Central won 2-1 over St. Clair in the tournament's opening game Thursday. USC scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to take the game into extra innings.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, USC knocked in the game-winning run from third base on a single to advance to the winner's bracket.

Minnesota Lake's Mike Doering hit a single to center to score the first two runs against Truman in the bottom of the third inning. Payton See recorded a base hit to start the scoring rally, with Garret FitzSimmons and Clark Minks both scoring on the single after reaching base with walks.

Another Minnesota Lake hit to center by Lewis Uhrich scored Minks for Post 287's third run.

Truman responded with a run in the top of the third when Dylan Petrowiak scored on Caleb Thate's base hit to right field.

Petrowiak walked to reach first before stealing second to get into scoring position and scoring on Thate's single.

Minnesota Lake added runs in the third and fifth innings to extend its lead. Krengel reached first on a passed ball on a strikeout, and advanced to second on an error by Garrett Schock on the throw down to first base.

Krengel advanced to third on a fielder's choice and then scored on a passed ball to make it 4-1.

The final Post 287 run was scored in the fifth when Josiah Breiter hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Ethan Boertje. Boertje had a base hit through the left side of the Truman infield, and advanced to second on a passed ball.

Krengel hit a flare single to center to move Boertje to third and he scored on Breiter's groundout.

Truman mustered some offense in the fourth inning with Cade Ekstrom leading off with a walk to take first base.

Ekstrom stole second and third before Schock knocked him in for the second Post 115 run with a base hit up the middle.

Ekstrom knocked in another Truman run in the top of the fifth inning, scoring Jeremy Smith from second with a base hit to right field.

Smith got a base hit through the right side of the infield before an error by Krengel moved Smith to second.

Minnesota Lake's Krengel struck out 14 in seven innings to earn the win, holding Truman to three runs on seven hits.

Truman's Jeremy Smith took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out two in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Clayton Feis came in for the final 2 1/3 innings of relief, striking out four with one walk for Post 115.

Post 287's Payton See and Garret FitzSimmons each went 1-for-2 with a run scored to help lead Minnesota Lake in the win.

Doering went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Uhrich went 2-for-4 with an RBI to add to Minnesota Lake's offensive effort.

Truman's Garrett Schock and Smith each went 2-for-4, with Schock collecting an RBI and Smith adding a run scored to pace the offensive effort.

Ekstrom went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while Petrowiak scored the third Truman run.
