FAIRMONT - Memorial service for Milton J. Welchlin, 84, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 5 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County VFW Post 1222 following the service.
Visitation with the family will be 4-5 p.m. Sunday at Lakeview Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at a later date due to Milton's decision to have his body donated to a medical school for research.
Milton passed away Wednesday morning, July 4, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Fairmont.
Milton John Welchlin was born May 17, 1928, in Fairmont, Minn., the son of John Martin and Minnie (Ebel) Welchlin. He grew up in Fairmont and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1946. After high school, Milton entered the U.S. Army in September of 1946 and spent some time in Japan, where he received a WW II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 26, 1947, and he enrolled at Macalester College. On Aug. 21, 1949, he was united in marriage to Lila Milbrandt in Fairmont. Milton graduated from Macalester College in 1952, and they settled in Fairmont, where Milton started his insurance business. He also traveled the Midwest and sold for L & M Berry Yellow Pages. Milton and Lila enjoyed their winters in Arizona for many years.
Milton was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Fairmont, Past Master of Chain Lake Masonic Lodge #64, AF & AM, charter member of the Fairmont Lions Club, a member of the Shriners Zurah Temple, lifetime member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County VFW Post 1222. He also served on the board of directors at Interlaken Golf Club. Milton had the privilege to be inducted into the Fairmont Athletic Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife, Lila Welchlin of Fairmont; son, John Welchlin and his wife, Lee Ann, of Fairmont; daughter, Linda Welchlin and friend, Roland Wagner, of Fairmont; two grandchildren, Shannon Vaske and her husband, Ryan, of Grey Cloud Island, Minn.; Tyson Welchlin of Los Angeles, Calif.; two great grandchildren, Emma and Maybel Vaske; sister, Redina Janssen and her husband, George, of Fairmont; brother, Martin Welchlin and his wife, Bernie, of Fairmont; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Berniece Milbrandt, Darlene and Roger Isenberg, all of Fairmont; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Milton was preceded in death by three brothers, Walt, Harry and Louis Welchlin; and two sisters, Alma Eisenmenger and Mable Dressely.
Memorials are preferred to the Fairmont Mayo Health System Chemotherapy Department.
