FAIRMONT - Funeral Service for Darvin D. Cottew, 80, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 10 a.m. today, July 3, 2012, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Interment will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery in Kiester, Minn. Military Honors will be provided at the church by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County VFW Post 1222. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church today. Darvin passed away Sunday morning, July 1, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minn.

Darvin Dean Cottew was born Dec. 8, 1931, in Fairmont, Minn. He was the son of Claire and Flora (Robertson) Cottew. He attended school in Fairmont.

On Nov. 9, 1949, Darvin enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served with Company B, 467th Mortar Battalion and was awarded the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Presidential Unit Citation and Korean Service Medal. Darvin received an honorable discharge on June 11, 1952.

On Aug. 30, 1952, Darvin was united in marriage to Phyllis Cox. The couple made their home in Waltham, Mass., until moving to the Fairmont area in 1955. In 1967, they moved to Kiester, Minn. This union was blessed with four children, Lynda, Helen, Bruce and Elaine. The couple shared 44 years together before Phyllis passed away on Aug. 28, 1996.

On Nov. 1, 1997, Darvin was united in marriage to Elaine Cyphers at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont. The couple made their home in Fairmont and shared 14 years together.

Darvin was an active member of the Korean War Veteran's Club in Fairmont as well as the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County VFW Post 1222. When he was younger, Darvin enjoyed playing baseball, fast-pitch softball, tennis and always enjoyed a good game of golf. More recently he was active at the Fairmont Senior Citizen's Center, where he and Elaine would play cards and cribbage. He loved watching Twins baseball as well as the Vikings. Darvin was also very proud to be a member of A.A.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Elaine Cottew of Fairmont; children, Helen Leland of Maple Grove, Minn., and Michael, Bruce (Carrie) Cottew of Georgetown, Ky., and Elaine (David) Thompson of Lake Mills, Iowa; stepchildren, Glenn (Jane) Cyphers of Janesville, Iowa, Becky (John) Wohlford of Monticello, Minn., Nora (Tom) Voss of North Mankato, Minn., Eddy Cyphers of Choteau, Mont., LeAnn (Michael) McCormick of Oregon City, Ore., Ruth Theobald of Northrop, Minn., and Kevin of Fairmont, Carol (Michael) Nowicki of East Chain, and Shirley (Kip) Willis of Kalispell, Mont.; 29 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; siblings, Clarice Kleinschrodt of Truman, Minn., Blaine (Leora) Cottew of Arizona, and Donna (Harold) Bowers of St. James, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Darvin was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Cottew; daughter, Lynda Schmitt; and siblings, Denzil Cottew, Faye Viesselman, Lyle Cottew, and Irvin Cottew.
