14U wins two at tourney

FAIRMONT - The Fairmont 14U traveling baseball team lost the opening game in the Owatonna Tournament to Richfield, 13-3, but came back to win against Waseca, 8-2, and Eastview, 14-2.

After finishing second in the pool, Fairmont faced Hutchinson and lost its final game, 9-5.

Fairmont's Nathan Gillis had a solo home run in the opening loss to Richfield. Ethan Lubenow added three hits and an RBI.

Clayton Maakestad pitched five innings for Fairmont, giving up five runs - one earned - on three hits, while striking out five.

Gillis came in for relief in the sixth inning and gave up four runs on two hits in one inning of work. Kale Fritz finished the game for Fairmont, giving up four runs on four hits.

Fairmont's Tyler Tennyson pitched five innings of no-hit baseball in the 8-2 win over Waseca. Tennyson struck out four and gave up one unearned run.

Cody Freese finished the game for Fairmont, pitching two innings and giving up one run on two hits.

Cole Emler had four hits and scored one run while collecting one RBI. Tennyson added two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Gillis collected one RBI on two hits for Fairmont.

Emler pitched a complete game for Fairmont in a 14-2 five-inning victory over Eastview. He gave up two runs on three hits in the Fairmont win.

Evan Closs had three hits, including two doubles, with one run scored along with five RBIs to help lead the Fairmont offense. Lubenow had three hits, three runs scored and one RBI for Fairmont.

Carter Lloyd had two runs, two hits and two RBIs, while Gillis had two hits, three runs scored and one RBI in the win.

Fairmont faced Hutchinson for the final game of the tournament, with Hutchinson winning 9-5.

Lubenow and Gillis led the Fairmont offense. Lubenow had two hits while Gillis had one and two runs scored.

Gillis also took the mound for the first 1 2/3 innings, giving up five runs. Tennyson came in for relief, pitching 3 1/3 innings and giving up one run on three hits.

Fritz took over the pitching duties in the fifth, allowing just two hits and three runs. Freese came in for the final two outs, and didn't give up a run.

Fairmont (8-2) will travel to Austin to play in the state tournament from July 27-29.
