No. 1 Warriors go 2-2 at tourney

FORT DODGE, Iowa - The Iowa Class 2A, No. 1-ranked North Union Warrior softball team posted a 2-2 record during the two-day Fort Dodge Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

North Union improved to 20-0 on the season by edging Webster City, 5-3, in first-round tournament action Friday before Class 5A Des Moines Dowling handed the Warriors their first loss of the season via a 7-1 second-round tourney decision.

Class 4A program Harlan outslugged North Union in third-round action, 9-5, Saturday before the Warriors bounced back to rout Emmetsburg, 13-0 in five innings, in their final tournament game in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Peyton Oleson struck out three and pitched five scoreless innings of two-hit softball against Emmetsburg to earn the complete-game victory for North Union.

Cheyanne Boland led off the fifth inning by hitting a solo home run. Cheyanne Boland went 2-for-4 in the game, knocking in three runs. Two batters later in the fifth, Sara Johnson belted a three-run home run.

Tori Johnson and Dena Looft each went 2-for-4 and collected two RBIs, Harley Lindell went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Taylor Mathine went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Jasmine Clausen and Autumn Boland each went 2-for-3 and scored twice for North Union.

In its four-run loss to Class 4A Harlan on Saturday, Lindell went 4-for-4 with one RBI and Collete Haag went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to lead North Union's offense. Clausen and Mathine each went 2-for-3 and scored runs for the Warriors.

Haag took the loss, pitching the complete game, giving up eight runs on six hits with one strikeout and two walks.

The Warriors' first loss of the season came at the hands of Class 5A Des Moines Dowling on Friday.

Tori Johnson went 2-for-4 and scored the lone run for North Union. Sara Johnson and Jasmine Clausen each went 2-for-3, accounting for four of the Warriors' eight hits in the game. Mathine and Looft added the other hits.

Haag took the loss for North Union, giving up six runs on eight hits, with one strikeout.

North Union's first game of the tournament was a 5-3 victory over Webster City on Friday.

With one out in the fifth inning, Sara Johnson reached on an error before Jasmine Clausen singled. Autumn Boland singled to plate Sara Johnson before Allie Ingalls drove in Clausen and Autumn Boland with a two-run triple. With two outs in the fifth inning, Cheyanne Boland added to the North Union lead with a two-run homer.

Clausen went 3-for-3 for North Union, while Ingalls went 1-for-4. Ingalls also earned the win inside the pitcher's circle by firing the complete game and giving up two runs on two hits and striking out six.

Cheyanne Boland went 2-for-4 with her home run and collected two RBIs, while Haag went 2-for-4 for the Warriors at the plate.

North Union (21-2) travels to West Bend today for a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader against West Bend-Mallard.
