JORDAN - The Fairmont Cardinal girls golf team holds the eighth spot in the Minnesota State High School League's Class AA state tournament after Day 1 of the two-day event at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.
The Section 2 champion Cardinals fired a collective 393 to trail Hermantown by 11 strokes for seventh place in the Class AA team standings heading into today's final round.
Powerhouse Detroit Lakes leads the entire Class AA state girls golf field after carding an incredible 308, paced by eighth-grade phenom Kate Smith. Smith, who tied for fifth place a year ago, fired a 2-under 70 on Tuesday to hold the No. 1 spot in the individual competition.
Lizzie Larson recorded one birdie and six pars on the way to a 49-43-92, while teammate Megan Rosol shot a 47-45-92 to top Fairmont's effort.
"Lizzie had a good round going, was hitting the ball very well. She had some issues putting today though and that didn't help her," said Fairmont head coach Ron Kallheim.
Emily Splinter finished with an 18-hole round of 48-49-97 for the Cardinals, while Elizabeth Kim completed the counting scores with her round of 53-59-112.
Cayce Craig had a birdie on the first hole of the day - the par-5 No. 10. Craig went on to finish with a 59-57-116, while Cassidy Krusemark rounded out the Cardinal effort with a round of 120.
"For Cassidy, this was her first real big tournament. And what does she get to do, but be the first one to tee off. She hit a good drive off of No. 10 and played well," said Kallheim.
Krusemark will be the first Cardinal to tee off today, with the first Fairmont round starting at 8:15 a.m on the par-5 No. 10 hole.
Blue Earth Area teammates Allie Curtis and Autumn Drake also competed at Ridges at Sand Creek. Curtis tallied a 45-47-92 to share the 47th spot with Larson and Rosol, while Drake shot a 53-55-108 to close Day 1 in 79th place.
Drake tees off her second round on No. 10 at 7:30 a.m. today, while Curtis will tee off at 7:39 a.m. on the par-5 No. 1.
Jackson County Central senior Kaylee Benson, who placed third overall last spring, is tied for eighth place overall with Detroit Lake's Matty Tschider. Both Benson and Tschider shot 80s on Day 1. Benson tees off at 7:57 a.m. today off of No. 1.
In the Class AA boys meet, Karter Smith carded a field-leading 5-under 67 and teammate Tyler Baukol fired a 1-under 71 to share second place overall in guiding Detroit Lakes to a three-shot lead - 291-294 - over Staples-Motley after Tuesday's opening.
From an area individual perspective, Fairmont junior Josh Baldus shot an opening-day round of 42-35-77 to share 32nd place overall. Blue Earth Area senior Andy Aukes is tied for 49th after the first round, carding a 38-41-79.
Aukes tees off on No. 1 at 12:09 p.m. today, while Baldus tees off on No. 1 at 12:18 p.m. at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.
