This is a sad incident

June 13, 2012
Fairmont Sentinel

To the Editor:

The City of Lakes Garden Club has served Fairmont and Martin County for more than 50 years. Its love of gardens and its dedication to our community has brought us years of contribution.

One commitment this organization has been involved with is the Martin County Fair, with its overview of the flower division. There is more work to this than one would think. They do a good job with all the details for a successful event.

Another project it has chosen is located at the entrance of Fairmont's Heritage Acres on Lake Avenue. A replica of a sailboat displays a floral and plant arrangement inside the boat, giving a visual expression of the beauty of our City of Lakes.

Every year, the garden club respectfully cares for the watering and appearance of this boat throughout the growing seasons. This year, the flowers and plants were planted the Saturday before Memorial Day. Before the day was over, someone had taken the flowers from the boat.

It's sad to learn someone would vandalize and rob others the opportunity to give to their community.
