Just what is RSVP anyway?

To the Editor:

This is a question I am often asked, so here goes:?The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is a nationwide program begun in 1971 to meet critical community needs through volunteers who are age 55 or older, and with open arms to those who are younger and eager to help.

It exists to meet the needs of non-profit and public organizations and is supported by grants from federal, state and local sources.

RSVP began in Martin County in 1997. Presently, we have 23 volunteer stations who report their volunteer hours to RSVP and then we report the hours to the Corporation for National and Community Service, which is a U.S. governmental agency that records and reports volunteer activity for the entire country.

Hopefully, you will consider using your time to help out STEP, Inc. with some maintenance work, or helping Red Rock Center at the Memorial Day picnic on May 28, to name a few.

Call Marge at CER, (507) 235-3141, for more information. You'll be happy you did.

Southern
