FAIRMONT - Learn self-defense, and aid a good cause.

A self-defense class through Chain of Lakes Karate Club will be held Saturday, May 12, at MC Fitness. Participants will be asked to donate for the benefit of St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

"We were contacted by St. Jude's and originally they asked if we could do a kick-a-thon," said Ben Madsen, a sensei (teacher) at Chain of Lakes Karate Club. "They wanted us to do some type of fund-raiser. At the time, the class consisted of mostly adults, and there was also the hassle of going door-to-door to collect pledges ... But we had taught women's self-defense courses, and thought that was a better route."

The course is designed to give the tools and confidence needed to deal with real-life situations.

Among the topics covered will be things such as date rape and rape prevention, personal awareness, general self-defense strategies and legal issues related to self-defense. Participants will spend most of the time practicing and working through self-defense techniques with other participants and instructors.

"Our goal is to make those with even zero training as proficient as possible ... We want everyone to have that knowledge going forward," Madsen said.

The class is limited to 40 people. Madsen said a second class will be held if there is a large turnout.

"We don't want to turn anyone away," Madsen said.

He noted that the St. Jude's fund-raiser is a kickoff of sorts for more self-defense classes to be offered.

"We hope to have one of these once every three months," Madsen said.

There is a suggested donation of $25 for the class, and pre-registration is a necessity. Registration can be done by email to clkcwsd@gmail.com with name, age and phone number. More can be learned at chainoflakeskarate.com

Because MC Fitness is donating space for the event, all funds raised will go to St. Jude's to provide treatment for cancer and other childhood diseases.
