FAIRMONT - Billy Griffith and Sam Frederickson rallied for a three-set victory at third doubles to help the New Ulm Eagles squeeze by the Fairmont Cardinals, 4-3, during tennis action on Thursday in Fairmont.

The Eagles combined a sweep of the doubles bracket with No. 1 singles netter Michael Maudal's win to exit the Cardinal Courts with the narrow South Central Conference win in hand.

"It really could have gone either way," Fairmont mentor Eric Johnson said in reference to the last match on the courts.

Griffith and Frederickson netted a hard-fought 6-4 first-set win over Andrew Johnson and Alex Nelson before the Cardinal duo bounced back for a 6-3 second-set triumph.

Griffith and Frederickson, however, fended off Andrew Johnson and Nelson in the third set, 7-5.

Bruno Beidacki staked Fairmont to an early lead by capturing back-to-back 6-0 sets over Noah Stocker at No. 4 singles before teammates Shawn Patterson and Grant Becker delivered straight-set decisions.

Patterson posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Calvin Collum at second singles, while Becker served a 6-0, 7-5 loss to Josh Koelpin at the No. 3 spot in the lineup.

Maudal, however, prevented a singles sweep by the home team, fending off Alex Kopischke in the second set, 7-6 (7-2), after winning the No. 1 spot's opening set via a 6-1 decision.

Juan Caceres Gomez, a foreign exchange student from Columbia, South America, and Isaiah Johnson combined at first doubles to net a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Cardinals' Joe Washa and J.T. Viesselman.

Josh Menzel and Nick Gartner completed New Ulm's doubles sweep via a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sterlin Johnson and Ryan Busche at the No. 2 position in the lineup.

Fairmont (0-2, 0-1 SCC) hosts Winona Cotter and Luverne in a 10 a.m. triangular on Saturday.
