To the Editor:
The first amendment provides for freedom of religion. It is to protect religion from government, not to protect government from religion.
The recent Health and Human Services mandate that forces religious institutions to pay for insurance coverage for medications and procedures that are morally objectionable is about government control.
Political cartoonists and the news media are doing their best to make this an issue of access to contraceptives. No one proposes to make contraceptives unavailable. The church, however, does object to paying for them when it has always taught against using them.
This method of government interference with teachings of the church was carefully chosen to cause division between Christians. Let us not fall for the bait.
Taking away religious freedom affects us all. If they get by with this, it will be hard to stop them from further assaults, not only on our religious freedoms, but on all our freedoms.
We see religious persecution going on in many countries around the world. It will happen here too if we let them.
Let's get active and get it stopped now.
