Spirit of giving alive

January 20, 2012

To the Editor:

Christmas miracle at Mayo Clinic Health System, Fairmont.

The simplest gift of a doll can touch so many lives.

A Christmas doll for 3-year-old Elayna, which through the weaving of events, would become a miracle of the heart.

Sandi and Audre had gotten a doll and outfits for this doll for the daughter of a co-worker. The present was gaily wrapped, festooned with candy and ready to be delivered that evening.

Then the unthinkable happened. The gift disappeared.

How could someone do this, especially at Christmas?

The loss was reported. Was this the end of the tale or the beginning of a blessing?

Word quickly spread among the staff, who generously gave more than enough to replace the gift. The extra money was enough to buy two pillows and a soft blanket for mama and baby to wrap themselves in.

Yes, the spirit of giving is alive and well at Mayo Clinic Health System, Fairmont.

The three housekeepers involved in this miracle were Audre Anderson, Sandi Fish and Carol Spanyard.
