To the Editor:
The holidays are over and many of us have more than enough stuff for a lifetime. Here's a little "food for thought" in the coming year. Instead of buying a friend or relative one more unnecessary and/or unused item, consider making a charitable donation in their name to the charity of their choice.
My close group of girlfriends stopped buying each other birthday gifts a few years ago. We still get together for lunch to celebrate each milestone but now that $15 or $20 gift goes where it is really needed.
There are so many wonderful ways to remember those we love with gifts that benefit others. For the past six years, I have been on the board of firectors for the Fairmont Area Foundation. I just completed serving my term as president in 2011. It was through this experience that I learned how many valuable non-profit agencies exist in Martin County.
Please consider this approach as you head into 2012.
