To the Editor:
It is my great Christmas pleasure to thank the people of Fairmont and Martin County for the tremendous support they have given The Salvation Army. There is no way we could provide the services we offer without the generosity of others.
I want to thank the congregations of area churches - St. John's United Church of Christ, United Methodist, Zion Lutheran Church of Fraser and St. James Lutheran Church of Northrop - for ringing bells and organizing collections of food and toys.
I want to thank the many service clubs who have helped - Rotary, Kiwanis, SERTOMA, Women of Today, People First, 3M Cares, Education Minnesota, and the Sherburn Lions Club - for ringing those bells at the kettle sites, especially on the cold days. And I want to thank the employees of Valero who came out to ring for us.
I want to thank the many members of youth groups and schools who have helped us - Martin Co. 4H, East Chain 4H, Boy Scouts, Fairmont High School, Martin Luther High School. Thank you for raising cash and food donations and for volunteering to ring the bells in those cold hours.
I want to thank the anonymous donor who put at least $600 (in clean crisp $50 bills) into the kettles on Saturday, Dec. 17. In the Twin Cities, that kind of contribution would be all over the TV news. We might not be flashy here, but we are thankful.
And I want to thank everyone who has contributed to The Salvation Army through our kettles. As I am writing this on Dec. 20, we are within $3,000 of our $23,000 kettle goal. Again, this is absolutely astounding, and I thank you.
I want to thank the staff of KSUM and KFMC for the tremendous Red Bag Day collection (and for giving me a chance to fulfill my childhood dreams of being on the radio.) Thank you. I also want to thank Woody Woodward and the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce for the donation of toys (and, what is usually forgotten - batteries) for our toyshop. You've made many children very happy this Christmas.
I want to thank Dan Bickness for organizing his annual light display as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army and for bringing in over $600.
Thanks also to the numerous individuals, families, clubs and businesses that have made donations of food, toys, toiletries and cash to The Salvation Army. You have made it possible for us to help share a little Christmas joy with those residents of Martin County, who otherwise might have not had a very merry Christmas.
My wife and I are continually amazed by the overwhelming generosity of this community. It is because of you that The Salvation Army is able to help others. We thank you and wish the peace and joy of our Lord Jesus Christ upon you and your families.
