Trimont hires police chief

Jenn Brookens — Staff Writer
POSTED: February 9, 2010

TRIMONT - The Trimont City Council has promoted Tony Nelson to police chief, effective later this month.

Current chief Kevin Christensen has accepted a job in Dallas.

"He forewarned us as early as December about this," said Trimont Councilman Thomas Hage.

Christensen handed in his resignation at the last council meeting.

There had been rumors about what the city would do if it lost the police chief.

Hage said the council talked about other possibilities that included contracting with the Martin County Sheriff's Department or teaming up with nearby police departments.

"We decided that until we're forced to do otherwise, we will keep our own force," Hage said. "There were options and people we met with and we toyed with the idea of a joint venture with another police department, but we decided to keep our own force as long as we can."

Along with Nelson, there is another part-time officer and an officer from a neighboring department able to work for Trimont on an as-needed basis.
