FAIRMONT - Memorial service for Robert "Bob" S. Schroeder, 86, of Fairmont will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial of ashes will follow at Lakeside Cemetery with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County VFW Post 1222.
Bob passed away Sunday afternoon, Aug. 30, 2009, at Fairmont Medical Center. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Robert Sanford Schroeder was born Dec. 7, 1922, in Barrington, Ill., the son of Dennis and Florence (Peck) Schroeder. He graduated from high school in Barrington and attended Northwestern University in Chicago for a short time. He entered the U.S. Army in August of 1942 and served in New Zealand during WWII. He was honorably discharged in April of 1945. After serving in the Army, Bob worked for an advertising agency in Chicago. He moved to Fairmont in 1953 and was the photographer for the Fairmont Sentinel. He was united in marriage to Ardella Burkhardt on April 28, 1956, in Trimont. They made their home in Fairmont and raised two children, Kim and Jil. Bob enjoyed being a photographer for many years and he retired in March of 1985. During his retirement, Bob enjoyed painting, woodworking, fishing, golfing, and especially visiting with his family and many friends. He was active at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont and a member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36.
Those who will cherish and honor his memory include, his wife, Ardella Schroeder of Fairmont; one son, Kim Schroeder and his wife, Helen, of Austin, Minn.; one daughter, Jil Ryan and her husband, John, of Apple Valley, Minn.; one granddaughter, Emily Schroeder; three grandsons, Nick Luger and his wife, Kristi, Jack and Frank Ryan; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by one brother; and one sister.
Memorials are preferred to Grace Lutheran Church of Fairmont.
