FAIRMONT - A detached garage apparently was struck by lightning early Friday morning in Fairmont, and is considered a loss.
According to Fairmont Fire Chief Dan Swanson, shortly before 1 a.m., firefighters were called to the 700 block of East Second Street, where the caller thought there was a fire. When firefighters arrived, they found a small detached garage completely engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
"The garage was a total loss, along with property inside, such as a lawn mower and tools," Swanson said.
The fire also melted some vinyl siding on the house. Estimated damage is about $15,000.
While investigators can't confirm the fire was caused by lightning, there are few other possibilities.
"The garage did not have any electricity, and hadn't for a number of years," Swanson said.
Other indicators were nearby trees struck by lightning and the garage door being made of metal.
"We're unaware of any other property damaged by lightning last night," Swanson said. "But it was a powerful lightning storm."
