Man in standoff appears in court

BLUE EARTH - Bail was set Monday for the man arrested in a six-hour armed standoff with police.

Kevin Robert Karl, 29, will be freed on a $20,000 bond or $5,000 cash.

Karl was apprehended just before 5 a.m. Friday after he allegedly got into an argument with his girlfriend at 9184 377th Ave. in rural Blue Earth late Thursday.

The complaint states Karl believed his girlfriend was cheating on him and he told her to move out. While she was outside calling a friend to pick her up, he went back into the residence, got a gun, grabbed her and fired three shots in the garage.

The woman was able to leave the residence, but her 5-year-old daughter was still inside. The woman called 911. Once she was inside a deputy's squad car, more shots were fired. The woman told police Karl had been drinking.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including two SWAT teams.

Karl did not respond to any attempt of communication, including loud speaker demands via the Faribault County Sheriff's Office public address system and a State Patrol helicopter.

Eventually, Karl came out unarmed and was arrested. The girl was found in the home uninjured.

Two search warrants were executed at the residence Friday afternoon. All firearms were seized, as well as a "small amount" of marijuana.

Judge Douglas Richards set conditions of release for Karl on Monday. He is allowed to see his two children, but must have supervised visits.

Karl is not to: use or have any alcohol or mood-altering substances, have contact with the woman or possess firearms.

Richards said the woman filed for an order for protection. Karl is not allowed to go to the residence if he posts bail, unless accompanied by an officer. Richards said Karl can take personal items out of the home, but any contested items must stay.

Karl is charged with two counts of felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Each carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and $14,000 fine. He also is charged with two misdemeanors.

Karl is scheduled to appear again in court on Aug. 25.
