ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Temporary faculty members at Macalester College are taking steps to form a union.

Campus organizers filed a petition Thursday with the National Labor Relations Board to hold a union election for adjunct professors at the St. Paul college.

The Star Tribune ( reports it's the first group of adjuncts in Minnesota to attempt to unionize since an organizing campaign was launched in the Twin Cities in January.

SooJin Pate, a member of the organizing committee, says temporary hires now make up nearly half the faculty at Macalester.

Pate says part-time adjuncts at the school are paid as little as $5,000 a course with no job security and few benefits.

Macalester Provost Kathleen Murray says the school pays adjunct instructors more than many colleges.
