Minn. deposit fee idea splits environmentalists

February 17, 2014
Associated Press

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — It's green-on-green combat as environmentalists debate whether Minnesota should have a 10-cent deposit on bottles and cans to encourage recycling.

It's an idea that's been kicking around for a while, but was revived this year when the state issued a report at the request of the Legislature, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported (http://bit.ly/1faGHfF).

Supporters of the idea say recycling rates and jobs would grow. But opponents say it would hurt recycling businesses by diverting high-value materials like aluminum.

It's not clear if any proposal will come up this session.
