New health coverage now in effect in Minn.

January 2, 2014

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — It's a day into the start of new insurance coverage purchased through Minnesota's health insurance marketplace for more than 50,000 people. But if you were expecting lines outside hospitals like people waiting for the next "Star Wars" flick, they haven't materialized.

Representatives of Minnesota associations representing doctors, hospitals and insurance companies say Thursday that there've been no initial reports of major problems with plans bought on MNsure. Also not apparent is a flood of people looking to use new coverage immediately.

Wendy Burt, spokeswoman for the Minnesota Hospital Association, says providers are prepared for an initial few weeks of confusion particularly from people unsure if their coverage is in effect. But both the hospital and doctor groups say anyone with a serious medical problem should seek coverage no matter what.
