House GOP gay marriage backer won't run again

November 7, 2013
Associated Press

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A Republican state representative who broke with most in her party to support legalizing gay marriage says she won't run for re-election next year.

Rep. Andrea Kieffer of Woodbury said in a prepared statement that she was honored to serve but that she never intended the Legislature to be her career. She was first elected to the suburban district east of St. Paul in 2010, and was handily re-elected last year. It has been a swing area though.

Kieffer was one of five legislative Republicans who split from colleagues last May to join most Democrats in voting for the bill that made gay marriage legal in Minnesota. That sparked speculation about conservative primary challengers for those lawmakers, but so far the only announced candidate for Kieffer's seat is a Democrat.
