UK: Residents in the 'low 100s' have gone to Syria

LONDON (AP) — Britain's domestic intelligence chief says U.K. residents in the "low hundreds" have gone to Syria to fight in that country's civil war.

Speaking in public to lawmakers in London, MI5 chief Andrew Parker stressed that al-Qaida ideology is spreading because of the ongoing strife there. He said Syria has become a very attractive place for al-Qaida sympathizers to go.

European intelligence officials have long warned that the Syrian conflict was attracting foreign fighters from European countries, many of whom have joined hard-line Islamic militant groups.
