BLUE5011 the church near my house has at times paid bus fare to Mankato to the homeless in Fairmont come sit & watch early morning a homeless person drag their suitcase down 1st street toward Chamber of Commerce/freedom gas station to wait for bus. I took in a homeless total stranger back when friendship village had burnt down units middle of winter. my neighbor just got use of her porch again a few days ago, because she had homeless people staying on it. if you not looking I guess you wont notice the homeless in need of help.

TRYANGLE, thank you for caring. And for helping. You are a life line for these kids.

Yes there are homeless in Martin County. We have had 2 youth stay with us for several months. Dad has been married several times, real mom is gone to Chicago living on drugs, and dad's new girl friend kicked him out. His Job has him traveling and he just left. Girl friend kicked the kids out, and a friend of my kids brought them to us cause they know we will help. (some details are changed to protect these minors) If you are serious about helping these Kids let your Church Youth leader know, hook up with social services, talk to School counselors. Our rotten society is Godless and homelessness, drug use and suicide are real.

I was an unplanned child. But you have to deal with the cards you are given. I learned from the school of hard knocks that you are known for the company you keep. My best advice from experience is to dump all your loser friends and build relationships with good people. When good people feel they can trust you, positive things will happen. Don't expect hand outs. Integrity is who you are when no one is watching.

There is a problem with homeless youth, and if you stay with relatives as a guest but still want and seek your own home you are homeless. A young person making minimum wage can not afford deposit and rent, so they sofa surf. Personally my son can afford his own home but has been told by landlords "people in his age group party too much."Not a fact about my son but it is a stigma young people face when seeking a rental.

The face of homelessness is not a person sleeping on a park bench; it is the family who bounces from relative to relative to friend to co-worker; the kids who stay over with friends to avoid going back to the house with a dozen assorted friends and relatives. I know of several local families in this situation, and it has a profound effect on the children. It is a problem here, maybe not on a grand scale, but it is.

Show me ONE homeless youth in Fairmont and I will provide 30 days room and board... I don't believe we have a problem here in rural MN, maybe in the big cities. There are too many "eyes" on the youth here for homelessness to happen.

I recall asking my mother about the "homeless" twenty years ago, and she told me she didn't know of ONE homeless person in the area.
