As the city of Fairmont, landlords and a group of concerned citizens continue to work out details a proposed local rental ordinance, we are not seeing a “win” for anyone involved....

So much of the rental housing in this town is garbage. How are we going to recruit good people to this town when there are few decent places to live?

This is a result of mr. Humpel and the council making a mistake. You do not let a self appointed group come up with something as wide ranging as this. An ordinance is important and has lasting affect. Nobody in this group knew anything about rentals except the Supt. of schools who happens to be a renter in Fairmont. The proper way would have been to have the city set up a committee of mixed interest--citizens, renters, landlords business owners, etc. have education meetings addressing the group and deciding what the problems might be. Then you decide how to progress with the issue. Is it a law enforce problem, is it violation of current ordinances, is it a few bad landlords or is it a renter problem. Table this issue at this time and start over when tempers cool down. This same group has more plans in its future and they just might affect you in a negative way.

It's all about government, when landlords quit, the city moves in. The city already has said that more rental properties are needed in Fairmont.
