FAIRMONT — Housing juvenile and mentally ill inmates requires a lot of road time for Martin Count....

Oh and back to the original comment...ITV was great...Elmore had a nice ITV room...it's just too bad more counties didn't believe in saving hundreds of taxpayer dollars for 5 minute hearings. If the technology and capabilities are there...use them.

I will not disagree that there were staff that were employed there at times that were simply not capable of handling the job. Those staff quickly found the door in most cases through investigating. On the other hand there were several staff employed there for a long time who did do their jobs well and many student success stories...those media articles are much easier to forget, which is understandable. It's residential treatment with many dual diagnosis kids and criminal minded kids...not an easy task. Just sad since many locals and professionals never stepped foot inside to talk to the students and staff. As for myself...it was a rewarding job in many ways for a long time. Best of luck and best wishes to those students and staff that needed the programming there to continue. I'm impartial with the closing either way to be honest. Thanks for posting.
The staff members of YSI have no one to blame but themselves
The comments by "arearesident" clearly demonstrate why YSI-Elmore is now closing. "arearesident" thinks it's comical that attorneys and Judges believed the juveniles sent to YSI were innocent. He also claims that he personally witnessed and reported two area juveniles who assaulted each other. That means he was likely employed there. Having said that, none of the problems with YSI had to do with anyone believing the kids were innocent or not. It had everything to do with keeping kids safe, which "arearesident" seems completely unconcerned with. If staff at YSI knew what they were doing, had stopped beating on kids, and made the safety of children a priority, there would have been no problems. But YSI chose to employ people like "arearesident", and that's why YSI is now closing it's doors. Area juveniles were placed elsewhere because staff at YSI were incompetent, and children were being hurt. The staff members of YSI have no one to blame but the
In case some "area residents" have forgotten:
If we were just talking about YSI resident vs. YSI resident violence, then some "area resident's" argument may have some merit. But the real issue was (and is) staff vs. YSI resident violence. This is something that "area resident" would rather not talk about.

And Red Wing doesn't fit in to this...juveniles are innocent when they get assaulted there too. Lol wow.
I think it's almost comical how the area public defenders and judges believe the juveniles sent to Elmore Academy were so innocent. I understand you have a job to do but when you mention getting your facts straight it should also apply for that as well. I personally witnessed and reported two area juveniles who assaulted eachother just to get pulled from Elmore...and they succeeded...and you all wanted the area juveniles placed elsewhere. Nice work done by all.

As a local defense attorney, I take issue with the statements made by the sheriff's office placing the blame (partially) for drive times on us. Recently, I specifically requested an ITV appearance for a juvenile just so the sheriff could avoid the long drive. It was the JUDGE that required the juvenile's appearance, not me. I think the Sentinel and the County Commissioners should do some fact checking on this issue.
As for YSI Elmore, it is too bad that they had to close, but all you have to do is a little internet research on the kids that got assaulted there and you will quickly see why they closed.
