I also agree with the above poster. What if Chirpich or Becker had been injured in Mahoney's quest for a 42-0 lead against a clearly overmatched team? Would it have been worth it? Calling timeouts, leaving your starters in and passing the football with 2 minutes left in the half of 35-0 high school game is the epitome of being classless.

Like ending a game for weather, the MSHSL also has a "mercy" rule where the clock will run in the 4th quarter if a team leads by 35 points or more, earlier if coaches agree. If a team is able to take a 35-0 lead in the first half, it is evident that in that particular game, on that night, the outcome has been decided in that contest before halftime. Unfortunately, the guys with the headsets on Fairmonts sidelines didn't realize that. Three football players were removed from this contest for unsportsmanlike conduct, but ironically, the most unsportsmanlike thing that took place that evening was the Fairmont coaches calling timeouts to get the ball back with 2 minutes remaining in the half then going no-huddle, hurry up offense to try to score again. It took an act of God to thwart those coaches plans, maybe He was sending them a message with the lightning. Hats off to the Fairmont kids on a great game, but I hope they are getting sportsmanship lessons at home!
