If we could find enough locally that were reliable and not afraid of hard work and weekends (which is what farm work entails for workers and owners) they would be hired. However that is much easier said than done.

Immigration reform is about more than just illegals - we need an immigration system that allows us to get valued workers here to support our agricultural activities without miles of red tape. The current system is complicated, making it difficult to maneuver. That just adds to the "illegal" problem. It also assumes that all Ag workers are seasonal - not recognizing the livestock industries need for a year round workforce. Improvements were brought forward in the immigration bill this summer but posturing about the border issue caused it to sit with only one legislative bodies approval. Politics as usual - nothing gets done because most politicians don't understand coming to the middle to find a workable solution.
