Hot and Cold

April 9, 2012 - Jennifer Brookens
Hot and Cold. Fire and Ice. If I didn't know better, I'd say Mother Nature is menopausal. First we have the record-breaking heat in March, not just a fluke 70-degree day like we've occasionally seen, but most of March was like May. Not only was it confusing to us, but to our outdoor plant and wildlife. Magnolia trees, cherry blossoms and irises and tulips are blooming about a month and a half ahead of schedule.

And now there's a freeze warning: say goodbye to those sweet little blossoms. The below-freezing temperatures are supposed to be for a few nights only... but that's also what we thought of those fluke 70 and 80-degree weather days last month.

I'm not much of a gardener, so I don't know what advice to give or take for any plant life that may be affected these next few cool evenings. And I have no idea what to expect next. Do I need to dig the winter coats and hats back out again. What about the shorts and sandals, do they need to go back until next month or next week? Something tells me Mother Nature is still making up her mind too... Guess we better tread carefully!
