Spring? More Like Summer!
March 18, 2012 - Jennifer Brookens
I know I'm stating the obvious for anyone whose taken a step outside in the past week, but it seems like we skipped right to Memorial Day weekend instead of St. Patrick's Day weekend. This St. Pattys Day, we had a record 80-degree high temp, breaking a record that was set all the way back in 1894.
A lot of people - myself included - are loving this weather... But the trouble is that for such an oddity, there is usually a consequence. Will our drought continue? Will we have a sweltering summer? Will we see a lot of severe weather this season? Of course, there's no clear-cut answer for any of these... But there is rain in the forecast for this week (good news for the farmers) and it will feel more Spring than Summer by week's end. Supposedly. As for the long-term effects, I know not to put away the coats too far out of reach (though I got greedy and put away the snowblower). Plus I've heard some gardeners advising about starting planting just yet... and many that have to replace plants such as strawberries because of the dry winter.
So not all is great with the light winter and early start on the warm-weather seasons. But after three winters in a row with brutal cold and blizzards, I really don't mind taking advantage of Mother Nature's hot flash this year!
