December 14, 2011 - Jodelle Greiner
I was going through some old magazines when I came across this quote:
“Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.” The author is unknown.
It really struck a chord with me because it’s so true.
You never know what someone else is going through: they may have a child or spouse with a serious illness or be going through one themselves, they may be worried about losing their job or home, they may be dealing with marital problems or abuse, they may be caring for an elderly parent who has a health issue. They could have a myriad of things going on in their lives.
Human nature tends to think that our own problems are bigger than anyone else’s, and that if we’re having a bad day, the whole world should have a bad day along with us. Misery loves company, you know.
What if you making a rude comment or gesture to someone is the thing that puts them over the edge? Words have power and your words could discourage someone to the point of not wanting to try anymore.
Instead of letting your bad mood affect everyone else, take a deep breath and be nice to everyone you meet today. It sounds very utopian, but a simple smile or compliment could be the encouragement that person needs to keep going.
