Holiday haze...

November 21, 2011 - Jennifer Brookens
And here we go again... Just like summer, we hit a mark and everything starts fast-forwarding into a blur until we hit an end-point.

Locally it starts with the GLOWS parade, and this year is extra-chaotic with Fairmont's football team making state. That day off, by the way, was spent making my daughter clean her room to prepare for her first-ever slumber party. That sleepover actually ended up pretty tame, for only one girl was able to do the sleepover after all that drama. But all was well, because that means they didn't have to share the Wii remotes and more snacks for them! Plus I didn't hear anything after 10:30 p.m., so I will call this one a success.

But now, I see the blur starting to overcome, just like the Christmas decorations riding over the fall decor. The rule of our house is no Christmas decor until Dec. 1. But the eBay battles for video games and toys has begun. Actually, they began in August, but considering how many times these kids change their minds on things, we could end up with three or four versions of their "I want..." list.

And see, here I am forgetting about Thanksgiving!! In fact, I had to be reminded to bring the turkey out to start thawing. And people are starting to protest that this holiday is starting to get swallowed up by the Christmas Machine. I actually plan to stay away from the stores this weekend, just as my meek form of protest. But I'm sure it won't make much of a difference. Just like Charlie Brown, I'm hoping that in the process of decorations, menus, and other events, the "reason for the seasons" won't be left on the side of the road.

That's my Thanksgiving/Christmas wish this year...
