Surprise! It's a pop-up
August 26, 2011 - Jodelle Greiner
It annoys me when I’m watching TV and one of those obnoxious pop-ups appears. I don’t mind the channel logo; those are fairly unobtrusive, but just about everything else ticks me off.
It wouldn’t be so bad if they just put a little crawler along the bottom of the screen, like they do for sports scores, or if they put a discreet little notice in a corner to announce the next show that’s going to start in five minutes. That I could handle.
Noooooo, they’ve got to promo everything that’s coming up in the next week, then, for good measure, promo stuff that’s going to air in the upcoming season. Then repeat it three or four times in a half hour. That’s just not necessary.
The frequency of the pop-ups is bad enough, but they’re getting so large, they take up almost a quarter of the screen. Not only that but the movement is very distracting. You have your banner to promote the show, fluttering graphics, then you have one, two or three people walking across part of the screen. It’s gone too far.
What really ticks me off is when these pop-ups block text at the bottom of the screen. It could be guest star names or the caption of what someone mumbled, but I WANT TO READ IT!
My advice to the people who do these things — just don’t. I don’t need constant reminders to watch that show that isn’t going to start for two months or the one that’s been airing for eight weeks that I haven’t watched anyway. If you want to promote your shows, put ’em in a regular ad and air them during the commercial breaks. That’s where they belong, not interrupting my shows.
