Big Time Rush

May 26, 2011 - Jennifer Brookens
This September, I'll be taking my daughter to her first concert, when the Nickelodeon boy band Big Time Rush comes to the Clay County Fair in Spencer. I'm probably more excited about it than I should be... After all, it's a "boy band," a band that was put together for a TV show none the less. But isn't that how the Monkees started?! Also, why would a thirty-something woman get excited about a boy band? (Though these boys are pretty cute, even if I could technically be old enough to be their... um, big sister?)

But in this context, it's OK. My daughter's 7, so of course these bands are directed toward her. She also loves the original boy band, The Beatles, so I'm pleased with her range in musical taste. And since it's a Nickelodeon production, it should be clean. (I remember my first rock concert at 13 or 14, for a band I convinced my mother was "safe," yet in concert their songs had a lot more dirty words than they did on the albums).

On that note, another reason I'm looking forward to this is that for now, my daughter isn't ashamed to be seen with me in public. Again remembering my first concert... I had my mom drop me off what was about half a block from the venue, so no one actually knew I had parents and I would've been mortified if my mom had come with me and tried to fit in. Karma loves to give me a good smack outside the head when it comes around, so I know it's only a matter of time when in my children's eyes, I will be the lamest goon on the planet. Despite how sometimes I get tired of their constant attention grabs now, it's reassuring to know that I am still the coolest mom in the world in their eyes.

My only concern now is that the concert is not until fall. Just hoping that my daughter's taste in music - and company - doesn't drastically change so much that I'm left jamming to a boy band all my myself. 'Cause, you know, that'd just be weird. Unless I can find a support group of Moms who secretly like boy bands to hang with...

PS - I have looked in vain for a map of the Clay County Fairgrounds Grandstand area, trying to figure out where our seats are located. If anyone has one, please send me a message or e-mail. Thanks!
