Facebook birthday love
May 21, 2010 - Jennifer Brookens
Let's face it: birthdays lose their allure as you get older. After 21... then it's 25... and then all the "old" jokes begin. And it's during that stretch you learn the entire world doesn't stop to worship you on your birthday like it seemed to as a kid. Most likely, you still have to go to work and you might get a few "Happy Birthday" wishes in passing, or a cake. But it's not the full-fledged gala from childhood. And usually by this time, you're realizing that boatloads of presents, or even a few special ones, aren't always guarenteed.
But this year's birthday almost recaptured that feeling. Was it my daughter's request that I "wear brown" on my birthday? "Because you look so pretty in brown," was her reply when I asked why. So I did.
Sure I got the compliments and good wishes, (plus a few presents from my husband and kids. And out to dinner with my mom). But what really stuck out for me... was all the "Happy Birthday" wishes on my Facebook wall. It was simple, yet almost like a wedding or something with everyone I know from all walks of my life coming forward and wishing me well, all at once. It wasn't a grand affair costing thousands, no travel required, but something about having that bit of connection with all the people I know and care about. Three wall pages full of "Happy Birthdays," virtual cupcakes, flowers and gifts, and the occasional "29 again" dig. And it totally made my day.
So I'm going to make an effort to do the same for every birthday notice that comes along for my facebook friends. Who knew a simple click could say so much?
Thanks, everyone! :)
