One of those moments

February 23, 2010 - Jennifer Brookens
A cold windy day and a piece of litter shouldn't make me all sentimental. But sometimes circumstances make you wonder or believe it's something more.

Perhaps it was the meltdown yesterday, when a simple doctor's check-up led to the picking and prodding of the wounds that lay beneath the surface. (I probably should've just said 'fine,' when asked how I was doing, but this doc knows me a little too well for that). It was nothing Earth-shattering, but enough to leave me with puffy eyelids and emotionally drained the rest of the day.

Then this morning, as I waited in the van at my daughter's bus stop, a plastic bag got caught in an updraft. At first I was reminded of that symbolism used in the "American Beauty" movie, but then the bag made an arc like a rainbow over the kids at the bus stop, then hovered right above my van. The thing was, it wasn't a store-brand bag. It just had the yellow smiley-face and the phrase "Have A Nice Day" on it. Framed perfectly in my driver's side window. Then, the bag continued its arc over the van and down the street, out of sight.

The kids at the bus stop were in awe and my son was giggling in the back, so I knew it wasn't some kind of hallucination. It was just one of those weird moments, but maybe I should take it as a sign. And say thanks.
