Oh, if it had only been Hillary ...

February 18, 2010 - Lee Smith
I cannot and will not say that Hillary Clinton is my favorite politician, but I'm putting forward a suggestion today that the United States — and the Democratic Party — would have fared much better had Hillary become president. It's not so much about answering the phone at 3 in the morning, but about the realpolitik that the Clintons understand.

It's amazing, really, to think back on the 2008 presidential campaign and realize that at one point, Hillary was considered the shoo-in. Instead, the "messiah" emerged with the strength of his record ... no ... the soundness of his plans ... no. Uh, why again did voters choose Barack Obama?

I doubt Hillary would have jumped into the health care morass again after the Clintons crushing debacle in 1993. I suspect that in 2009 she and Bill would have known that jobs was the No. 1 issue, as in the repeated mantra of his 1992 campaign: It's the economy, stupid. Hillary also would have surrounded herself with more capable advisers, instead of the many left-wing loons hired by Obama. And she clearly has a better grasp of international problems, which she has identifed succinctly as secretary of state.

In the end, Hillary's chance has come and gone. History cannot reverse that. Given the Obama administration, that's a shame.
