One for the litter box ...

December 22, 2009 - Lee Smith
I saw the movie with the big blue cat-people. Living with two cats myself, I'm surprised more tails didn't get stepped on.

James Cameron apparently saved the stepping on for white people and corporations, Hollywood's favorite villains. And, what the heck, he thought he would try to crush history while he was at it.

Yes, Avatar is another rendition of the evil corporation, led entirely by a white cast, pilfering and destroying the sensitive and nature-loving natives. Call it "Dances with Wolves" meets "Star Wars." And let's save the rain forest. Lots of good anti-capitalist, anti-American crap in this one too. With some war-on-terror bashing to boot. Perhaps someone should inform Mr. Cameron that George W. Bush is no longer president. Cameron should come out of the editing room more often to take in current events.

Speaking of which, one wonders if truly, in the not-too-distant future, when this adventure is set, if the corporate world might be something more akin to the colors of our society, with equal opportunity "exploiters" coming in all races, shapes and sizes. This would at least suggest that Cameron knows more about history than his jaded take on America's rise. Perhaps he should consider the various colors and beliefs of the people throughout the world who have treated each other badly. Perhaps someone should tell him that Africans enslaved other Africans. The same goes for Native Americans.

And, one final thought: Cameron and his viewers should weigh just what is wrong, exactly, with a culture clash in which one side emerges victorious. In Avatar, Cameron picks his winner. In history, the results have been many and varied. Coming out on top is just a fact, not a sin.
