Hold Her Tight...

November 23, 2009 - Jennifer Brookens
"It's tough being a kid," my now 6-year-old daughter lamented the other day.

I had to sigh and laugh a little. After all, it sounded almost cute; these words of wisdom coming out of this little child. But a few days later, I'm realizing just how right she is. In one day, I learned about an obituary for a 12-year-old boy who died from H1N1 complications, a little baby in critical condition after falling off a couch, and a Level 3 sex offender with several crimes against children relocating to town.

These news items speak or will speak for themselves. It is tough to stay fair and balanced when there are reasons these items personally offend you. But as a professional, it's also what I need to do. How these items will play out I will leave with just the facts in the news.

But I know last night both my daughter and son got a few extra hugs when I came home. And when my daughter said, "Don't let me go," as she often does when I give her a good hug, I was only too happy to hold her a little bit tighter.
