Rosie, DeeDee and Winston

October 24, 2009 - Jennifer Brookens
I've never been a fan of the little toy dogs: those things that some girly-girls carry in their purses like a fashion accessory and that I usually refer to as "hairy rats." But I've gained a new affection for the tiny little Yorkshire Terriers, or "Yorkies," after spending time with Rosie, DeeDee and Winston.

I met them the first time we stayed at a new friend's house in Sioux Falls. Luckily, our friend doesn't carry them around in her purse, dress them up or have gooey names for them like "Poopsie-Pie." This time, on our third visit, the little dogs are actually approaching us. (Both dogs and visitors were standoff-ish at first).

Their owner told their stories. The male is the one that comes closest to living up to the "yappy" reputation of small dogs (sorry Winston), but the two females are very sweet and loving. The two females were once used for breeding. One (DeeDee) was with a reputable breeder and is the mother of Winston, while the other (Rosie) was rescued from what was likely a puppy mill. A vet's exam showed Rosie's jaw had been broken at one point, but she is the one that is most open to being around other people... but very nervous around feet. Can't say as I blame her.

Granted if/when the time comes to have my own dog, I will still be leaning toward my bulldogs, pugs and Boston Terriers. But I have a new appreciation for the little Yorkies with sweet dispostions. Just don't ask me about poodles.
