| | Wanted: Good bookSeptember 15, 2009 - Meg AlexanderWell, I recently finished "Emma" and was not in the least disappointed -- far from it, in fact. I've been rethinking what I previously wrote about the novel, in regards to the movie "Clueless." Let me clarify that the film is a broad, modern take on Austen's novel. Both protagonists are bored, shallow yet semi-intelligent young women, leading lives of privilege, who take up match-making as a hobby of sorts, oblivious of the dangers of playing with people's hearts. Overall the book is much more light-hearted than "Pride and Prejudice" and "Mansfield Park," but the characters' miscommunication and conceited nature is very much true to the writer's style. My next Austen novel will undoubtedly be "Sense and Sensibility" but I won't be jumping into that anytime in the terribly near future ... that I can foresee. I'm still slowwwwwly struggling through "Spy in the House of Love." It's one of those that probably would have been better as a short story. Finishing this book is just an act of willpower, not a matter of enjoyment and/or intellectual stimulation, which is a sad, sad thing for an avid book looker. So if anyone has any suggestions for my next read ... Article CommentsNo comments posted for this article. Post a Comment | in: News, Blogs & Events Web |
