I'll miss my store
April 21, 2009 - Jennifer Brookens
We are all creatures of habit. So I wonder how many times I will pull in to the now empty parking lot of what was County Market before I realize it's closed for good.
County Market was part of Fairmont for 20 years, and I was a loyal shopper for nearly 12 of those years. I know some people complained about the plain cement floors (other places have them, too!) or how you had to bag your own groceries, but County Market was my grocery store of choice. For one, when we first moved to town, we rented a house right behind the Five Lakes Centre. With my husband and I sharing a car, a lot of times being able to walk to the store to pick up the needed items was a blessing. Even after we moved into our own home, County Market was still the closest location-wise.
This past weekend, there were sensational deals, with everything in the store 50 percent off. I was so proud to get four bags worth of groceries and other items for only $12. But that was topped on the last day, when customers were able to fill up a brown paper grocery sack with darn near anything for only $5. I couldn't help but gloat after bringing home what would've been $40-$45 worth of items for only $5.
It will be tough for me to break my County Market habit. But on the bright side, the building won't set empty for too long. A Fareway Foods chain will be moving in this summer, and I hope everyone will be willing to give this new business a chance to grow and thrive in our community.
I also hope Jeff Vetter and the gang at his catering business will still be making that fried chicken that saved me so many times for meal planning on a hectic afternoon. Because I don't know what a summer without that handy little trick up my sleeve will be like...
