| | Long walksApril 17, 2009 - Kylie SaariI'll be honest. I consider a long walk walking to Walmart. I have never done it, but I considered once, and it seemed like too long of a walk. That said, I want to bring attention to a man I talked to this week who is starting a really long walk in Fairmont on Sunday. Terry Pieper, with the VFW in South St. Paul, is embarking on 170 miles through Minnesota's 2nd district to raise money for two charities supporting military personnel and their families. What amazed me about this adventure maybe shows a little bit about my attitude in life. Pieper is walking to raise money. He hasn't raised it yet. He is trusting the people to come out and support is cause, and walking all that way whether they do or not. VFW posts will along the way are holding the fundraisers as he goes. He hopes to raise $50,000, an he was challenged to raise by commander Joe McAleavy, who raised $17,000 last year when he walked across Martin County. Peiper told me McAleavy would appear in public in a dress if he raises the challenged amount. I admire his resolve to follow through without the guarantee of success. And I hope the weather holds out for him.
